Book excerpt: This report assesses recent economic developments in central eastern Europe and the Baltic states, south-eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), updating the assessment provided in the November 2003 report (ISBN 1898802238). Overall, the region grew by 5.6 per cent in 2003, compared with 3.9 per cent the previous year. Among emerging economies, only China and India performed better. Growth is forecast to slow to 4.9 per cent in 2004, mainly due to slower expansion in the CIS.
