When Malcolm, son of the unfortunate King Duncan, returned from the Court of Edward the Confessor where he had taken refuge, and was raised to the throne of Scotland, he made Fleance, son of Banquo, Lord High Steward of his kingdom. From that time the family appear to have adopted the title of their office as their surname, changing it from Steward into Stewart or Stuart.
