Book excerpt: Governor Kean speaks on the occasion of being awarded the "Eternal Light" Award by the Jewish Theological Seminary. He states that the award is a symbol, a representation, of ethics and values and he is humbled to receive the award. He further speaks about the Torah as a document of historcal ethics and the important lesson contained therein about limiting the power of government. Kean also likens government officials to absolute rulers under the law or primus inter pares, defined as the concept of 'a first among equals.' He hopes that his reflections gives his audience an opportunity to look at the form and direction which government takes, as well as its roots, sources and historical foundations. The Jewish Theological Seminary, founded in 1886 is commited to introducing religious alternatives in Israel and eastern Europe and to raising a generation of literate and observant Jews in North America.
