A great many organizations are involved with natural area protection, many in a variety of ways. It was not possi ble to contact every organization. The importance of the hundreds of individuals and local efforts which were not referenced in this book cannot be discounted, however. It is due in part to the concern, time, and energy of these thousands of other individuals and organizations that natural area programs exist at all. A great many pe0p1e have given generously of their time to make this volume possible-too many, in fact, to name them all. The Nature Conservancy wishes to express its gratitude to everyone who gave it advice, sent materials, discussed his programs, and read drafts of chapters for this volume and, too, to thank all those who are exploring and experimenting with new ways to protect our heritage and the rights of all living things.
