Book excerpt: Excerpt from Margins on Fluid Milk in the Duluth-Superior Marketing Area, 1947-48 Approximately million quarts of milk were sold monthly in the duluth-superior marketing area by 14 handlers whose records were available for this study. Of these, 10 were located in Duluth, 2 in Superior, and 2 in Cloquet. With two exceptions, the handlers generally confined their distribution of milk to the cities in which they were located. One of the handlers located in Superior also sold in Duluth, whereas one Duluth handler also sold in Cloquet. Thus, ll handlers sold milk in Duluth, 2 in Superior, and 3 in Cloquet. Some handlers also supplied limited areas outside the marketing area. Although the 3 largest handlers accounted for about 50 percent of all the milk distributed in the market, the milk distributing business in duluth-superior was nevertheless not so concen tratad in the hands of a few large handlers as in some other cities. Sales during the period studied indicate a change toward greater concentration of sales among the large handlers (table this came about primarily at the expense of the third largest group.
