I was anxious to investigate life histories and ecological rela tions before they had been appreciably affected by the mining and other industrial developments that have inaugurated a new era in the vast interior wilds. By 1954 the Quebec North Shore and Labrador Railway had reached Knob Lake and had begun to transport iron ore to the port of Seven Islands, 360 miles to the southward on the Gulf of St. Lawrence. It was a rare privilege to be able to spend a season on that biological frontier while natural conditions prevailed for the most part.
