Book excerpt: This thesis examines the process of industrialization in Thailand through an ethnographic study of women outworkers in the textile and food processing industries in the Chiang Mai region. Since WWII, Thailand has undergone a socio-economic transformation. The Thai state has set parameters for national development with intensive industrialization and modernization plans, policies and programs. Since the 1970s, its industrial policy has shifted to export-oriented industrialization, decentralization and regional development, and an opening of the national economy to globalization and flexible specialization processes. This thesis is organized in three parts. Part One introduces the key concepts, issues and approaches associated with these labor processes, and an outline of my research methods.
