Book excerpt: This capstone focuses on one high school's programming to assist freshmen in transitioning to high school. It to adds student perspectives to the existing body of research on freshman transition with two main questions: which current transitional activities garner lasting results and effectively help freshmen adjust to high school, and what changes would freshmen like to see in order to make the transition to high school easier? Working with a focus group of students, the author gained insight into their opinions and experiences and information regarding the effectiveness of current transitional programming including the Link Crew transition program, a daily advisory period, and ninth grade academic houses. The author concludes that: 1) each of the programming elements studied can add value to the transition process, and 2) transitional programming must provide a variety of social and academic support opportunities to students and families.
