Book excerpt: Excerpt from Distinguishing the Species of Brassica by Their Seed Present-day investigators recognize the importance of the chromo some number as an aid in the determination of species. As pointed out by Sinskaia however, crossability with other species and the character of the hybrids must also be taken into consideration in establishing the relationship of different forms. For example, B. Kaber (b arvensis) and B oleracea have the same chromosome number, but no record has been found of a successful cross between the two species. Sutton (54) and others have shown that when a successful cross between distinct species is accomplished it may produce sterile hybrids or a segregation of nondescript character in F2. Unfortu nately, seed and plant specimens are rarely cited in the literature to substantiate the authenticity of materials used in cytological research. This is particularly important in the genus Brassica, since the seeds are not commonly recognized and the Variable nature of the plants requires critical identification. In the absence of such records it can only be assumed that the reported results are based on authentic material.
