Book excerpt: Abstract: The researcher examined three widths of the stance when stealing second base in respect to performance time. The researcher also examined the use of the cross-over step and the jab-step methods of stealing second base with respect to performance time. Three widths were determined in a pilot study using the width of the average college baseball player's shoulders as the medium width. The narrow width was considered as 50% of the width of the shoulders and the wide width was considered as 150% of the width of the shoulders. College baseball players were instructed in the conditions under investigation and given time to practice the conditions. The performance times of the subjects were recorded by the use of photoelectric cells and digital clock counters. A 2 x 3 x 2 factorial analysis of variance (ANOVA) with both repeated factors was computed for each of the dependent variable performance times. The interpretation of the analyses of the data indicated that the wide stance was faster than the medium and the narrow widths; the medium width was faster than the narrow width; and that the cross-over step was faster than the jab-step method.
