Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of Books in the Mercantile Library, of the City of New York Almost the first act of the present Board was to appoint this Committee, which inne distely commenced operations. During June their President visited Cambridge and Boston, for the purpose of examining the system of cataloguing employed at Harvard College and in the public libraries of Boston; and on his return a corps of five cataloguers, under the supervision of the Librarian, went actively to work. No su ciently complete record of the accessions and losses of the Library was kept during the sixteen years since the last Catalogue. The first step was therefore to make an inventory of the Library, involving the handling of at least one hundred and fifty thousand volumes, as each book had to be dealt with at least twice. This inventory consists of over sixty thousand cards or slips, in two sets. One of these sets is alphabeted by names of Iuthors, including the titles of anonymous books. The other set contains the titles of the hooks, and is classed by subjects. These two sets of cards correspond respectively to the Alphabetical Catalogue and the Classified Index in the printed Catalogue, and there is a third set for the Novels. In preparing this inventory, permanent future economy as well as present conve nience was contemplated. The sets of cards referred to, after being copied for the printer.
