Book excerpt: Abstract: Workshop proceedings discuss cultural practices (vegetarian diets, pica) that affect nutrient intake during pregnancy and abuses (alcohol, smoking, caffeine, over-the-counter drugs, megadose nutrients) affecting health and nutritional status of the mother and fetus. The aims of the workshop were: to review and evaluate current research and to develop a report on the effects of certain abuses during pregnancy; to separate the effects of the abused substance from those effects that result from alterations in nutrient utilization; and to recommend interventions that are feasible and effective. Care is taken to make the results useful to personnel responsible for providing maternal and child care information. (kbc).
