The Code is regularly examined and discussed by the membership and the AIR Board, and is a 'living document that must change and be shaped as the practice of institutional research continues to evolve and develop.' The Code was updated in 2001, and amended in 2013, with the title changed to Code of Ethics and Professional Practice (Appendix A). The profession's embrace of data analytics has raised new issues to explore, resulting in another evaluation and publication of the AIR Statement of Ethical Principles in 2019. ... Advancing the Ethical Use of Data in Higher Education, provided in two successive volumes, is intended to both support and to expand upon the Statement and the Association's conversations to date. In particular, the goal of these publications is to help institutional researchers understand ethical issues: (1) as separate from legal or compliance issues; (2) related to creating and using predictive models; (3) related to communicating data and information; and (4) related to acting on the information provided by predictive models and data analytics. The basic tenets discussed in the Statement, such as privacy, data contextualization, fairness and transparency, and accessibility are woven throughout both volumes"--Introduction.
