Book excerpt: A One-Year Diary of an American Teacher in China actually jumpstarted in late 2003 when Mr. Miller was overwhelmed with the emotional extent of family matters. An unemployed teacher at the time, he was presented the opportunity to go to China to teach English. It was an irresistible offer, and in a short time he was on his way to the Far East. Having gone into the unknown at various stages of his life, he welcomed what would certainly be a challenge. So many surprises, so many interesting people, so much of what could not have been imagined began to unfold in China, and it continued that way for an entire year. Although great distances of travel were not practical, he did visit many historic cities from the Ming Dynasty and some places that attribute to the uniqueness of China. Mr. Miller was able to enlighten his students, who already possessed a good understanding of the English language, to a greater understanding of its use. Having made a worthwhile impression on them, and with the closing of his contract at hand, well wishes were exchanged, and the inevitable returning to the United States materialized on time.
