Book excerpt: The Moon is our closest neighbor on the cosmos. Sense the beginning, it has had an influence on people everywhere. It's regular passing gave us a sense of time. Some believed it was a God. Others believed it was related to God in some way. At some point people began to think of it as a distant land. The thought of a distant land implied the possibility of voyage there someday and the endless possibilities of what the first visitors might find. At first, the ideas of getting there ranged from harnessing birds much the same way horses are harnessed too discovering the exact spot where the moon rises in the distant horizon and simply stepping on to it as it comes up. As time passed, and humanity learned more about the natural world, these fanciful ideas were slowly replaced by more practical ones, and as such it becomes only a matter of time before travel across the gulf of space is possible and setting foot on another world is a reality. But to do so, there has to be a spark, a flash point where the practical plan meets reality and at the same time the world is ready to move forward. A friendly Wager is the story of how a bet between two brothers ignited the spark that set off a series of events leading to the conquest of the Moon.
