Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Later Extinct Floras of North America Those who have had access to the plates upon which he placed his names have always endeavored to preserve these names by referring, when ever occasion demanded it, to newb. Mss undistributed plat-es, U. S._geol. Surv. This, however, could not be recognized as publication, and in the lapse of time some of the names Were used for other species and under the rule of priority could no longer be retained-for those of Dr. Newberry. It is also to be noted that names of such Species as existed in manuscript only were liable to be superseded by published names of other authors, and under such circumstances Dr. Newberry's names would have to be dropped and the others substituted. One instance. In this connection is Sabal occidentalis, Newb. Mss, which became S. Imperialis Dn. In arranging the text it has been thought desirable to quote Dr. New berry's original published description in each instance, followed by his sub sequent manuscript notes, whenever such could be' obtained. In case a manuscript description was found for any unpublished species it has been included in full. III the event of no published or manuscript description having been found for any species, such name or memorandum as could be found in connection with the specimen was adopted and a note to that effect included over the editor's initials. In' the case of but one figure could abso lutely no clue be obtained as to its probable reference by Dr. Newberry.
