Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Annals of Kendal, 1861: Being a Historical and Descriptive Account of Kendal and the Neighbourhood, With Biographical Sketches of Many Eminent Personages Connected With the Town It is improbable, if not impossible, that a work like the present, comprehending treatises on so many different sub jects, should be interesting to all; or should be altogether interesting even to any one reader. Such multiform collections must' be perused with diflerent feelings, tastes, and sentiments. But I hope that my readers will be candid enough to reflect, that those parts which may seem very unimportant to them, may, perhaps, be the only points of interest to others. Again, I would solicit some lenity, from the consideration that, however easy it may be for one person to discover faults or omissions in what relates to his own studies, it is not so easy for the ordinary faculties of one person to apprehend and illustrate, with accuracy, so many different subjects. This consideration, and the fact that I could only apply myself to the performance during those hours which are usually devoted to relaxation and rest, may, I hope, be accepted as an apology for the imperfections with which the work may be chargeable.
