He is of Opinion, too, that the object in front is what in every-day parlance we call a man. But he can substantiate his opinion with solid reasons. He walks upright, not on all fours. He has arms and legs, not fore-legs and hind-legs. He has fingers on his hands and toes on his feet, that preserve due proportions. These, indeed, are good reasons; but not final, not what our definition styles the last and most universal causes. They are not the last, because there is one farther removed, so far removed in fact, that, unless philosophy suggested it, the physiologist would be in continual danger of confounding men with beasts.
