Book excerpt: Excerpt from North Carolina Forest Growth and Drain, 1937-1943 The major change in the distribution of the drain by commodity has been the significant increase in the amount of pulpwood cut from.the softwoods (table In 1937, only 3 percent of the softwood drain went into pulpwood; in 1943 this had increased to percent. Very little change has occurred in the pattern of hardwood use. About 95 percent of the drain on the forest growing stock is caused by sawlog, fuelwood, pulpwood, and veneer log cutting.
