Speaking at the conclusion of his 1861 sermon entitled, Scriptural Vindication of Slavery, Warren condemned anti-slavery voices in the North for allowing the ideal of freedom to override the clear teachings of Scripture which sanctioned the enslavement of African-Americans. He later published the full version of his views in 1864 with Nellie Norton: or, Southern Slavery and the Bible: A Scriptural Refutation of the Principal Arguments upon which the Abolitionists Rely, A Vindication of Southern Slavery from the Old and New Testaments
