Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mineral Deposits of the Cerbat Range, Black Mountains, and Grand Wash Cliffs, Mohave County, Arizona The field work forming the basis of this paper is a reconnaissance made by the writer, under the direction of Mr. Waldemar Lindgren, during the period extending from October, 1906, to February, 1907. The purpose of the paper is to furnish a general idea of the charac ter, occurrence, distribution, and development of the mineral re sources of a part of western Arizona (see fig. 1) concerning which little has hitherto been known. The reconnaissance covered almost the whole of Mohave County, except some smaller camps in the ex treme north and in the southern part of the county, which could not be reached in the time allotted to the work. Owing to the desert conditions of the region - the scarcity of grass and water - a camp outfit was dispensed with and subsistence was obtained from the mining camps and prospectors. The general method of work employed was to make hasty sketch maps and sections of the various camps or mines, using a box compass and aneroid for determination of bearings and elevations, and tying the work wherever practicable to Land Office section or township corners, railroads, other surveys, and mining-claim monuments.
