Book excerpt: Headquarters United States Marine Corps commissioned this study to improve Meteorological and Oceanographic (METOC) Support throughout the Marine Corps Air- Ground Task Force. METOC support requirements have evolved considerably with the increased use of sensor driven weather sensitive technology as well as with the growing appreciation commanders have for the impacts METOC has on weapon platforms tactics and personnel. Supporting critical environmental information requirements of every MAGTF combat element commander has stretched Marine Corps METOC support beyond its current capabilities. The Marine Corps has its own METOC specialists namely the 6800 Occupational Field (OccFld). Historically the Marine Corps has considered METOC exclusively a requirement of aircraft operations and as such all METOC Marines were originally assigned to Marine Aircraft Wing (MAW) and Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) billets. Following Desert Storm both II and Ill Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) submitted Fleet Operational Needs Statements (FONS) that identified METOC Support deficiencies to the MAGTF Command Element (CE) Ground Combat Element (GCE) and Combat Service Support Element (CSSE). In response to this FONS Marine Corps Combat Development Center initiated a study of METOC support.
