Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metal cutting is one of the most important methods of removing unwanted material in the production of mechanical components. This treatment identifies the major problem areas and relates observed performance to fundamentals of physics, chemistry, materials behaviour, and the engineeringsciences of heat transfer, solid mechanics, and surface science (tribology). In general, several simplified models which emphasize different aspects of the problem are considered: these include thermal, material, and surface considerations which are important to various degrees depending on themachining process. A practical approach is taken in which a wide variety of common experiences are explained in fundamental terms. Thus the aim of this book is to illustrate how fundamental concepts can be used to explain observed results and how solutions to new machining problems may be achievedby application of scientific principle. This is a paperback reprint of this successful title first published in 1984.
