The Melbourne and Suburban Railway Co. was formed in 1857 to build a line from Princes Bridge to Windsor, with a branch from Richmond to Hawthorn. In 1862, the company sold out to the Melbourne Railway Company. Little further development occurred until Victorian Railways took over the privately owned lines in the early 1880s.
