Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent work has shown the feasibility of using combustion zone temperature profiles to obtain overall reaction kinetics for heat release in that zone. Such a procedure gives new motivation to the old interest in measuring temperature profiles through the combustion wave of solid propellants. The only method presently capable of providing a continuous temperature profile from deep within the solid through the dark zone is the imbedded thermocouple technique. A comprehensive review of this technique was, therefore, undertaken in order to evaluate sources of error involved and to make an assessment of the potential for success in deriving overall kinetics from such a measurement. The results of this review along with original calculations of condensed phase response errors are reported herein.
