Book excerpt: In 1969, Travis Hirschi proposed that criminologists begin examining why individuals do not commit crime. He stated that in order to understand why individuals deviate, we must examine individuals which conform. Hirschi suggested that the presence, absence, or strength of four main social bonds will determine an individual's propensity to become involved in delinquency. The four bonds included attachment, commitment, involvement, and belief.
