He is a noted journalist and a prolific writer over 32 books and numerous articles to his credit. Some of his books have been translated into different Indian languages and in English, Japanese, German and Chinese as well. His autobiography Apane Apane Pinjre (Self Cage)- the first dalit autobiography in Hindi- was very well received. He was Adviser to Railway Ministry for Hindi language promotion during 1999-2002. He has participated in various seminars held for the cause of dalit literature and social movement. He has prepared scripts for radio. TV and films, and has been associated with the theatre as well. He has also founded many organisations which have acquired national and international reputation. Presently, he is a senior fellow at Indian Institute of Advanced study, Rashtrapati Nivas, Shimla.
