Book excerpt: Automation has become an ever more pervasive way of doing business, not only in the civilian sector, but in the military as well. The Army's command and control structure has, and will continue to be a major recipient of much of this automation. Some view automation as being only more electronic gadgetry which will not be any more capable of meeting information needs than previous command and control systems. The purpose of this paper is to determine whether or not the Army Tactical Command and Control System (ATCCS) (a highly automated system) will meet information needs of a heavy brigade commander. Special emphasis is placed on whether or not the ATCCS will increase or decrease the information overload a brigade commander can experience in planning for and executing battles and engagements.
