Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Method of Estimating the Economic Effects of Planned Conservation on an Individual Farm, January 1942 Changes in the kind, acreage, and management of crops may affect the organization of a farm in several ways. A decrease in production of grain may reduce sales of grain or production of grain-consuming livestock. An increase in production of legumes may make it possible to plow under some as green manure or feed the increase to additional roughage-consuming animals. Decrease in grain and increase in roughage may result in no change in livestock production where there is opportunity to adjust the rations of the livestock to the changed feed supply. Improvement in quality of roughage, even though the quantity fed remains unchanged, may increase livestock production. Any one of these changes in crop production may have important effects on farm costs and income through its effect on the livestock system.
